On the brink of elimination England needed an win. And they got it when Jermain Defoe knocked in a goal as they beat Slovenia 1-0 on Wednesday, advancing to the tournament’s second round.

The English win got them second place in Group C behind the United States.

The U.S. needed extra time and Landon Donovan’s foot to push them past Algeria 1-0.

In England’s win, they played much more aggressively than they did in draws with the Americans and Algerians, the English went ahead when Defoe put in James Milner’s cross from five yards out with a right-footed shot.

As for the Americans, they won Group C with their late game victory against an Algerian team that could manage just one goal on pool play.

Next up for the United States will be match-up the Group D runner up on Saturday. For England, they face-off against the Group D winner on Sunday.

After Saturday night’s multi-state Powerball Lottery drawing yielded no grand prize, the new jackpot amount for the mid-week draw could be worth an estimated $97 million to a single winner.

That translates to a cash out option of more than $50 million to the winner.

Even though no one hit the jackpot on Saturday night, Powerball still handed out some really nice prizes to winners at other levels.

Saturday night’s winning numbers were 9, 30, 31, 50, 54 and the Powerball was 39. The Power Play multiplier was 3.

There were a little over eight hundred thousand winning tickets sold across the nation over the weekend and about $6.5 million in cash was one.

Of those 800,000 winning tickets, the state of Florida seems to be the luckiest. There were more than 70,000 winners in the Sunshine State.

Powerball Lottery drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59PM and is played in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Oakland Raiders have made a myriad of offseason changes to their football team. The most notable being at the quarterback position.

They have changed the completion of their franchise with the release of former number one overall pick JaMarcus Russell and the acquisition of Jason Campbell from the Washington Redskins.

This week the Raiders made another move to help solidify their roster, but instead of changes, this move kept things the same.

Defensive lineman Richard Seymour has signed his $12.4 million exclusive franchise tag tender.

Apparently, Seymour and the Raiders had been working on getting a long-term deal done, but the two sides have decided on this one-year tender.

Seymour is expected to be ready for the start of training camp on July 28th in Napa.

The Wizards will almost certainly be choosing between Kentucky freshman John Wall and national player of the year Evan Turner of Ohio State.

Irene Pollin, the wife of longtime owner Abe Pollin, was on hand at the lottery ceremony in place of her late husband who died in November.

“This is very, very special,” said Pollin. “I have been in this my entire adult life and to be here, representing my husband, this is very special to me tonight.”

The Philadelphia 76ers grabbed the No. 2 pick. The New Jersey Nets fell to third.

Kobe’s not the only Laker hurting these days.

Center Andrew Bynum has practiced only one time since Los Angeles advanced to the conference final. Bynum said his knee was in bad shape and was getting worse after taking part in a team scrimmage on Saturday.

While these reports have been flying around, the Lakers have had no comment and on Sunday, neither Bryant nor Bynum would speak to reporters.

The Lakers will need these two guys if they expect to have a chance at a championship.

Johnson has five years remaining on a $60 million contract he signed with the Texans in 2007, but the wide-out feels that he’s already outplayed that contract.

WHAT?

Johnson has 587 receptions for 7,948 yards and 42 touchdowns in seven NFL seasons and led the Texans to ZERO playoff appearances.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Just play football Andre and stop being a greedy S.O.B.

Johnson, who led the NFL in receiving yards last season (1,569 yards), is scheduled to make $5.8 million this season.

If these players don’t want to play out the contracts that they signed… I say let them rot!

The UConn women may have won their second straight NCAA championship earlier this year and are on a 78-game winning streak, but does that make them a good reason to waste the presidents time?

It’s women’s basketball! Who cares about women’s basketball? Is Joe Biden too busy?

This hole inviting sports teams to Washington is a joke.

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella says he expects his team to live up to their reputations and salaries. He fells winning is the only thing that matters.

Piniella is fed up with losing and says the press is asking all the wrong questions.

When the Cubs skipper was asked if outfielder Tyler Colvin might be better off playing everyday in the minors instead of serving as Chicago’s late-inning defensive replacement, Piniella went off on winning.

“He needs to play? What we need to do is win,” Piniella said. “We keep talking about at-bats for people. We talk about people needing to play. We talk about everything but winning baseball games. That’s what the hell I want to talk about … period.”

The Cubs are 16-22 and in fourth place in the NL Central, but have the third-highest payroll in the major leagues.

On Sunday afternoon, the A’s left-hander tossed the 19th perfect game in major league history when he shut down the Tampa Bay Rays in a 4-0 Oakland win.

After the Mother’s Day game, Peggy Lindsey joined her grandson’s feud with New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez when she laughed and said, “Stick it, A-Rod.”

Braden had made more of a name for himself for his enraged reaction to A-Rod walking across the mound back on April 22nd, accusing the three-time AL MVP of breaking an unwritten rule of baseball etiquette.

This might be one of the most ridiculous stories I have ever heard and now granny’s getting involved.

Congrats on throwing the perfect game Dallas, but it may be time to put this whole baseball etiquette thing to bed.

Gilbert Arenas has arrived home from a halfway house, after having completed the first part of his punishment for bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room.

His sentence for felony gun possession also includes two years of probation, a $5,000 fine and 400 hours of community service.

According to reports, upon arriving at his home in the Virginia suburbs, he could not get past the gated driveway where he did not know the pass code to get in.

Once a women inside let him in, he re-emerged a few moments later in a long-sleeve black T-shirt with a hood pulled low over his forehead. He hopped into a white Range Rover and drove off.

The 28-year-old point guard is now free to resume his basketball career. His NBA suspension expired at the end of the season.
