Former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito had his hand wraps confiscated shortly before his title fight against “Sugar” Shane Mosley on January 24th. The wraps were removed when Mosley’s trainer, Nazim Richardson, objected to their use.

A California Department of Justice senior criminalist inspected the wrappings under a stereo-microscope and with an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer determined the wraps contained sulfur and calcium. These two elements, with the addition of oxygen, make Plaster of Paris.

In a February hearing held a few days after Mosey’s TKO win in the ninth round, the state athletic commission revoked the licenses of Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, for one year.

And justifiably so. Critics call Boxing a barbaric and savage sport and lobby for it’s banishment all the time. I may not be one of the extremists that say Boxing should be done away with, however their is no room for infractions like this in the sport.

As far as I am concerned, one year is not enough. Margarito and his trainer should never be allowed within five hundred feet of a ring again.
