It is tough for the fans, as well as as an organization itself, to go through a year like this past season in Detroit. It is clear that the Lions have many issues to address this NFL off-season. With a refurbished coaching staff consisting of new head coach Jim Schwartz, Gunther Cunningham running the defense and Scott Linehan calling the plays on offense, Detroit has reason to be optimistic.

The big question swirling throughout front offices around the league is, what will rookie head coach Jim Schwartz and the Lions do with the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft?

It may seem like Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford is the obvious choice. With Stafford as the new face of the franchise, could the Lions sore out of obscurity? When you look at the success of guys like Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, there is no reason to think that Stafford couldn’t be good right away.

There may be no wrong answer. If Schwartz chooses to go a different rout, Jon Kitna or Daunte Culpepper should still be able to move the Lions in the right direction. There is nowhere to go but up.

The NFL is a copy-cat league, if Stafford goes number one, he should probably thank Ryan and Flacco.
